The Product Hunt Opportunity (and the Traps)

Product Hunt is the closest thing to a free launch platform that still has real distribution power. A top-5 finish on any given day means:

1,000–5,000 website visitors
50–300 signups (depending on your conversion)
Permanent SEO boost from PH backlink
Press interest and social proof

But most launches fail — not because the product is bad, but because founders treat it like a "post and pray" moment.

The 30-Day Pre-Launch Checklist

Week 4 Before Launch:

Set up "Coming Soon" page on Product Hunt
Start collecting followers (minimum 100 before launch)
Identify your Hunter (find someone with 1000+ followers on PH)

Week 3 Before Launch:

Prepare your product demo GIF (15 seconds, shows the key use case)
Write your maker comment (most important thing you'll post on launch day)
Draft your headline — test 3 versions with 10 people

Week 2 Before Launch:

Build a launch day notification list (email + Slack/Discord + Twitter DMs)
Reach out to 5 similar-sized founders for mutual upvote support
Schedule your social posts for launch day

Week 1 Before Launch:

Finalize all assets (logo, screenshots, tagline, description)
Brief your network on the launch date + ask for specific help
Test your site/app at scale — ensure it won't go down under traffic

Launch Day Execution

12:01 AM PST — The Magic Minute

Products go live at 12:01 AM PST. This is when the algorithm starts counting. Being in the top 5 at 6 AM PST dramatically increases your chances of finishing in the top 5.

Have a wake-up alarm. Have your notification messages pre-written and ready to send.

First 2 Hours

Your goal: 50+ upvotes in the first 2 hours.

Activate your network:

1. Send your launch notification email (subject: "We're live on Product Hunt — 30 seconds to help?")

2. Post in Slack/Discord communities

3. Twitter/X launch tweet with link

4. Direct DM your 20 most supportive contacts

The Maker Comment (Read This Twice)

Your first comment as a maker is pinned at the top. This is prime real estate.

A great maker comment includes:

Your founding story (1 paragraph)
The specific problem you're solving and for whom
What's unique about your approach
An exclusive offer for PH community (discount/extended trial)
A question to encourage comments

Respond to Every Comment

This increases engagement signals, which boosts your ranking. Set aside 4 hours for this on launch day.

What NOT to Do

❌ Ask friends to "go vote for me" without them being genuinely interested users

❌ Post in general communities with "Hey vote for my product!" (looks desperate, low conversion)

❌ Change your headline or description after going live

❌ Go to sleep at midnight and check in the morning

❌ Ignore the Product Hunt community after launch day

Post-Launch: The 48 Hours That Matter

Most founders disappear after launch day. The top founders do the opposite.

**Email all signups** within 24 hours with a personal message
**Follow up** on every comment with genuine engagement
**Repurpose** your PH ranking as social proof immediately
**Write** a "launch recap" blog post while momentum is hot

A top-10 finish that you don't capitalize on is a wasted opportunity. A top-20 finish that you follow up aggressively can still become your first 100 customers.
